I'm driven by a deep appreciation for the built environment, which I've gained with over 15 years of experience as a city planner. I love learning about how structures shape our urban landscapes, and how societies decide what to build and where. My journey from city planning to photography and journalism has allowed me to explore the intricate relationship between form and function, and to capture the essence of how our surroundings move us. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FLAMINGO I
The Flamingo statue, created by renowned American artist Alexander Calder, is a vibrant, 53-foot-tall steel sculpture located in Chicago’s Federal Plaza. Installed in 1974, this striking red artwork is an abstract, modernist piece that stands in sharp contrast to the austere black and gray architecture surrounding it, particularly the minimalist buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The sculpture’s swooping, arching form and vivid color introduce a sense of fluidity and warmth to the urban plaza, which otherwise feels formal and restrained. Calder’s choice of color and shape brings energy and an inviting focal point to the plaza, encouraging public interaction and serving as a spot for gatherings and social events. Beyond its physical allure, Flamingo has cultural and artistic significance, symbolizing a bold embrace of public art within the civic space of downtown Chicago. This piece was commissioned under the General Services Administration's "Art in Architecture" program, which aimed to enhance public buildings with works of art. As an example of Calder’s famous "stabile" sculptures, Flamingo remains stationary yet seems to radiate movement, as if it could stride through the plaza.
