In his late thirties, VerKamp embarked on what turned into a ten year journey in South America, where he was introduced to traditional shamanism and the entheogen Ayahuasca. These experiences were transformative, and VerKamp found himself drawn to the spiritual practices and the self-realization that they offered. Through the use of Ayahuasca and its active ingredient, DMT, VerKamp had what he described as a "third eye opening." This experience led him back to art, which he found to be a powerful form of expression for his newfound spirituality. VerKamp's art is heavily influenced by his experiences with shamanism and self-realization. His work explores themes of consciousness, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of all things. He uses vibrant colors and intricate designs to convey a sense of depth and complexity. VerKamp's experiences with Christianity influenced his spirituality more broadly, and that is very much reflected in his artwork. He has created Christian artworks that reflect the inclusiveness of Jesus' message, combining his Christian roots and experience with Shamanism to inform his creative process. Many Christians believe that Jesus' message of love, compassion, and inclusiveness is central to their faith, and this message has been a source of inspiration for artists for centuries. Jesus' teachings of caring for the marginalized, loving one's enemies, and accepting all people regardless of their background or beliefs are themes that are explored in VerKamp's Christian-inspired artworks. ontinuing on the retirement path, I realized that being around the types of American men and women I was around for over 21 years could not nor would not ever be replicated. On the other hand, the void that I could control was the things and people I saw daily. After multiple deployments and long conversations with friends and family. I realized that they could never understand the full gravity of what I was explaining to them about other countries and my experiences in the world. Like that, I had an answer to that void. Photography! I started my business Lens-14 Photography shortly after retiring from the military and was all over the map. Do I do portraits, landscapes, weddings, cars, animals? Then it hit me; the void was the inability to relay what I had seen and experienced effectively. Not that I can't tell stories, I am a fantastic storyteller (True Story), it was that some things just couldn't be felt or understood unless they are seen. Lens-14 Photography aims to provide you with "my" visual depiction of the things I see from traveling to wherever those places are that I shall end up. As the kids once asked, "Why do you always tell us about the places you have been?" ABOUT THE ARTIST ~ FRANK WILSON A full time professional artist since 1971, Frank's formal art education took place at the School of Practical Art and the Art Institute of Boston where he majored in Editorial Illustration and minored in Photography. He continued his fine art education with further studies under Marko Lolo Marchi and Steven Yankopolis. Over the years, the artist has won many awards for his paintings and sculptures. In February 2010 he was awarded First Place and an Honorable Mention for two entries in the Turner Colour Works of Japan International Gouache Painting Competition. In September of 2005 he was awarded by the City of Chico California, the COBA (Chico Outdoor Board Art) Peoples Choice Award and a commission for a large outdoor mural. Twice, by invitation, he exhibited in the New York State Museum, and has also been featured in art galleries in Canada, New England, Virginia, North Carolina and California as well as in Zurich and Geneva, Switzerland. On October 9, 1998 he was a featured artist on ABC's nationally televised "Good Morning America" show. On January 23, 2009 he was a featured artist on CBS Action News on KHSL TV in Chico, California. A prolific painter, Wilson has created over 3,000 original works in oils and watercolors just since 1995 in addition to hundreds of sculptures.
